How the next Pope will be chosen

With Pope Benedict XVI leaving the papal office after resigning two weeks ago, the Catholic Church will have to rush to pick his replacement before Easter.

Normally, the College of Cardinals is not allowed to select a new pontiff until 15 to 20 days after the office becomes vacant -- usually when the previous pope has died.

Benedict's resignation is a rare exception. The last man to quit the head of the Catholic Church did so 600 years ago.

The situation calls for some rule bending, and having the current pope involved is proving advantageous.

He has slightly amended the 500-year-old policy on pope selection to get a successor into place more rapidly.

The cardinals may to be able to pull it off before March 15, according to Vatican spokesman, Father Federico Lombardi.

DAVIDO'S FATHER INSISTS SON MUST GET A DEGREE

Davido has been everywhere for the past two years – From relative obscurity to being one of the A-list artistes in the country.
He’s released a debut album with chart topping singles, won international awards and performed in and out of the country, what else could he ask for?

Well, Davido isn’t doing the asking, his father is; more like demanding. Sources say Mr Adeleke wants his son to enrol in a University and graduate with a degree.

And to make that happen, he has reportedly built an entire department at Babcock University (where he is currently a provost) for Creative Arts which will have Davido and his manager Kamal as the only students for now.

Water Runs Again In Keffi, Less Than 24Hrs After Students’ Protest

Less than 24hrs after the Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK) was closed indefinitely following students’ demonstration against lack of water and electricity in which at least two students were shot dead by armed soldiers and policemen, pipe-borne water has been restored in the ancient town and it has flowed ceaselessly.

The university students had – after close two weeks absence of water supply – for six straight hours, protested along major roads in Keffi, obstructing vehicular and human movement.

Efforts to quell the riot led to the deployment of truckloads of armed soldiers who stormed the scene and fired live rounds killing two students and injuring four others.

By Tuesday, residents of the ancient town confirmed that water began to flow few hours after the protest.

Student Union Government (SUG) leader, Rabiu Omame Tijani also confirmed that water ran shortly after the protest. “All of a sudden, water began to run after the protest. It appeared somebody somewhere was sabotaging the masses”, Comrade Tijani said.

General Manager of Nasarawa State Water Board, Engr. Ibabrahim Safiyanu, also confirmed the development which he attributed to improved “power supply” which enabled the board to pump and release water to Keffi.

Judge sentences Bobby Brown to 55 days in prison for DUI

Bobby Brown has been sentenced to 55 days in a Los Angeles jail and four years of probation for a drunken driving case.
 

City attorney's spokesman Frank Mateljan says Brown was sentenced Tuesday after pleading no contest to charges he was under the influence and driving on a suspended license when he was arrested in October.
 

Brown was on probation for another DUI case at the time.
 

The 44-year-old "New Edition" singer was ordered to report to jail March 20. He also was placed on four years of informal probation and will be required to complete an 18-month alcohol treatment program.
 

Brown's attorney Tiffany Feder had no immediate comment on the sentence.

Nasarawa State University Shut Down After 4 Students Are Killed During Protests

The Nasarawa State University has been shut down indefinitely following the murder of 4 students during a protest around the school’s vicinity.

The students were reportedly protesting over the scarcity of water and power on the campus for several days. The students of the institution were said to have blocked the Abuja/Keffi road during the protest.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the Nasarawa State Police Command, Michael Ada confirmed the killing of the students and told Punch that seven others received gunshot injuries. About 17 other students were arrested by security agents, including the institution’s President of the Students Union.

Pictures have emerged of a smiling Reeva Steenkamp arriving at the home of her boyfriend, Oscar Pistorius, on the night he is alleged to have murdered her.

The stills, taken from CCTV footage, show the 29-year-old model driving into the Silver Woods estate on the outskirts of the South African capital Pretoria just before 6pm on Valentine's Day.

The series of images show how, as her Mini Cooper car pulled up to a guarded entranceway, she held her right hand against her cheek and right eye, then broke into a broad smile as the estate's uniformed guards greeted her.

Katangowa is bigger than the Computer Village, as the market covers about 26 hectares of land with most of the traders dealing in second-hand clothes.
 

Katangowa shows a vivid picture of a disorganised setting. While the major entrance to the market from Lagos-Abeokuta expressway is almost taken over by street traders, a large portion of the market has been overtaken by refuse. During the visit, some of the items seen on display in the market in large quantities were clothes, bags, shoes, curtains, belts and other textile materials.

Oscar granted bail, but questions remain...

Pretoria - Paralympian Oscar Pistorius was granted bail of R1 million on Friday, but sharp questions were asked about his version of events the night his girlfriend was killed.

The Pretoria Magistrate's Court agreed he could pay R100 000 first and the rest of the bail amount by March 1.

Pistorius has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his home on February 14.

Giving his lengthy ruling, Magistrate Desmond Nair said he had problems with Pistorius' version of the shooting in his Pretoria home that left Steenkamp dead.

We all want to be happy and fulfilled. often, though we demand too much of life. We set strict criteria for what will make us happy. When those criteria are not met, we develop attitude that makes matters worse. The most basic, most revealing question you can ask yourself is, WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE ME HAPPY?

1 Do you have to be happy every minute of every day?
2 Does everyone have to do what you want them to do?
3 Does every aspect of your work have to be fulfilling all the time?
4 Do you have to be making money than everyone else?
5 Do you have to have more power than everyone else?
6 Do you have to be recognized and rewarded for everything you do
7 Do you have to be loved by everyone you know?

The same attitude spoils many relationships. I've seen many of them fail because one or both of the people involved demanded too much of the other. Not everyone is perfectly neat, beautiful, charming, loving, funny, or attentive all the time. Life isn't a romance novel.
We often demand too much of love and friendship, and the same is true of happiness. It's easy to be happy if you can find happiness in small doses. If you set impossible criteria for happiness, then it will be all but impossible for you to be happy.

Autopsy Report reveals Nigerian Music Star Goldie died as a result of an “Intracerebral Hemorrhage” caused by “Hypertensive Heart Disease”

The autopsy report for Nigerian music star Susan Oluwabimpe “Goldie” Harvey has revealed that she died as a result of an “Intracerebral Hemorrhage” caused by “Hypertensive Heart Disease”.

Goldie’s autposy was carried out at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja and the report was signed by Dr. O.O Oyewole.

Report following the autopsy carried out after her  sudden death  at the Lagos State  University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, Lagos  revealed that the Kennis Music star, suffered a terminal ‘hypertensive heart disease’ which resulted to’ intracerebellar haemorrhage.’  The autopsy carried out February 19, was  signed by Dr. O.O Oyewole of the Department of Pathology and Forensic Medicine. The burial arrangement for the former  Big Brother Africa house mate will be announced by the family.

Creative and boundary-pushing artiste Goldie died on the 14th of February 2013, just hours after she arrived from Los Angeles where she had gone to experience the Grammy Awards.

What is Intracerebral Hemorrhage?
 
Intracerebral hemorrhage occurs when a diseased blood vessel within the brain bursts, allowing blood to leak inside the brain. (The name means within the cerebrum or brain). The sudden increase in pressure within the brain can cause damage to the brain cells surrounding the blood. If the amount of blood increases rapidly, the sudden buildup in pressure can lead to unconsciousness or death. Intracerebral hemorrhage usually occurs in selected parts of the brain, including the basal ganglia, cerebellum, brain stem, or cortex.

What causes it?
 
The most common cause of intracerebral hemorrhage is high blood pressure (hypertension). Since high blood pressure by itself often causes no symptoms, many people with intracranial hemorrhage are not aware that they have high blood pressure, or that it needs to be treated. Less common causes of intracerebral hemorrhage include trauma, infections, tumors, blood clotting deficiencies, and abnormalities in blood vessels (such as arteriovenous malformations).

Who gets it? 

Intracerebral hemorrhage occurs at all ages. The average age is lower than for ischemic stroke. Less common than ischemic strokes, hemorrhagic strokes make up about 12 percent of all strokes.

Oscar Pistorius bawls in court, faces charge of premeditated murder

In an emotionally wrenching hearing Tuesday, a judge upgraded the charge against Oscar Pistorius to premeditated murder, saying he could not rule out the possibility that the track star planned the shooting death of girlfriend.
 

But the judge said he will consider downgrading the charge later.
 

Pistorius had been charged with murder for the Valentine's Day shooting of Reeva Steenkamp, and the hearing Tuesday was to determine whether he should be allowed to post bail.
 

But prosecutors had said they would try to get the charge upgraded. And throughout the proceeding, they hammered away at the possibility that Steenkamp's killing was premeditated. The defense countered by contending Pistorius thought his girlfriend was an intruder.
 

With the new charge, Pistorius' case for bail may prove much more difficult. The defense must now try to argue that "exceptional circumstances" exist that would justify bail.
 

"I fail to understand how I could be charged with murder as I had no intention to kill my girlfriend," Pistorius said in a statement read to the court by his lawyer.
 

Pistorius, heaving and sobbing, was too upset to read it himself.

Fifa rankings: Nigeria leap 22 places after Nations Cup win

Nigeria have risen 22 places in this month's Fifa rankings after winning the Africa Cup of Nations for the third time and Fourth in Africa

The Super Eagles rose to 30th place following their 1-0 win over Burkina Faso in Johannesburg last Sunday.

The Stallions were rewarded for reaching their first major final - with their ranking rising to 55th.

Cote d'Ivoire remain the highest ranked African side, rising two places to 12th overall.

The Elephants' rise in rankings comes despite their elimination at the quarter-final stage, after losing to eventual champions, Nigeria.

Ghana's fourth-place finish in South Africa saw the Black Stars move up seven places to 19th.

Nations Cup hosts South Africa rose 25 places to 60th position after Bafana Bafana's promising showing on home soil, where they exited at the quarter-final stage, after losing to Mali.

FIFA says the February edition of the ranking have have resulted in improved rankings for nearly all of the teams involved in the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa and the first matches of the latest round of CONCACAF qualifying matches for the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil.

Hip-hop singer, Susan Harvey, popularly called Goldie, is dead.

News of the death of the sensational artiste, who was a housemate at the Big Brother Africa in 2012, broke on Thursday night, throwing the Nigerian  entertainment world and the larger public into mourning.

Although details of the cause of the reported death were sketchy as at press time, reports indicated that she died on Thursday night at Reddington Hospital, in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The PUNCH called the Reddington Hospital last night but a voice at the  Front Desk of the  hospital last  night said, “Sorry, I can’t confirm that now because our information unit has closed for the day.”

It was learnt that Goldie died in the presence of a Lagos-based entertainer, Denrele Edun, who was in the hospital with her.

President Jonathan showers Gifts, Honors on Super Eagles

President  Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday announced a cash gift of N5m to each member of the victorious Super Eagles and the team’s three assistant coaches that clinched the gold medal in the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.

While the Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, was given N10m, members of the technical crew were also given N2m each.

The cash gifts also came with a plot of land and national honours for each member the team.

Keshi bagged the national honour of the Commander of the Order of Niger while his three assistants and the team captain, Joseph Yobo, were conferred with Officer of the Order of Niger.

The remaining players were conferred with Member of the Order of Niger.

With his exclusion from Banky W’s R&BW album, there is little or no evidence left to prove that Wizkid as parted ways with EME, although Banky W insists he is still part of the Segun Demuren owned record company.

Wizkid is about to kick start (has started) his recording company named STAR BOY ENTERTAINMENT. The company will also be in charge of other franchise such as Star Boy Shoes, Star Boy Clothing, Star Boy Cap, Star Boy Management and more.

Wizkid took his first step in introducing Star Boy Ent. to the world in the viral video for The Matter with Maleek Berry.

Wiz mentioned “Star Boy” and “Star Boy Team” repeatedly in the track which is “something”. The release of Wizkid’s Azonto video on Thursday will confirm further if he’s still under EME or not.

BREAKING!!! Keshi withdraws resignation

Stephen Okechukwu Keshi the AFCON winning coach of the Super Eagles of Nigeria has reportedly withdrawn his resignation after a meeting with the Sports Minister Bolaji Abdullahi.

The resignation is thought to have been withdrawn after certain assurances were given by the minister. The original decision to resign is thought to have been caused by certain actions taken by members of the NFF board during the tournament in a bid to remove Keshi.

The minister waded into the rift in order to save the Nigerian government from a huge embarrassment after such a great milestone.

Reality TV show star, Kim Kardashian who is widely known and admired, worldwide for her role in the popular E! Network’s reality TV series “Keeping up with the Kardashians”will be the co-host and ‘special platinum guest’ of R&B singer Darey’s upcoming Valentine concert ‘Love Like a Movie.

Super Eagles win AFCON 2013

The 2013 edition of the African Cup of Nations which started with clearly no hope or expectations from Nigerian about the performance of the Super Eagles turned out to be the year of success for the team as it came out of the competition victorious.

The Eagles faced the Stallion of Burkina Faso in a match which showed all the trappings of candour, technical, tactical play.

Both teams sized themselves up in the opening minutes of the match with Victor Moses and Ike Uche making forays into the Burkina Faso half of the pitch but with no luck.

Luck, however, smiled on the Nigerian team when Steven Mba of Warri Wolves, in a moment of individual brilliance stepped up to the plate and  scored a spectacular goal after beating two Burkina Faso players to put the Eagles one up.

The result ended a wait of 19 years for the Super Eagles to be reunited with the trophy that means so much to Nigerians worldwide. Only time will tell if the generation of 2013 can emulate the past vintages beyond this tournament, however, with a young squad, including superstars such as Moses, Mikel, and Musa, as well as the rawer talents of Mba, Oboabona, and Omeruo, the future looks very promising indeed.

50 Cent heads for Nollywood

If what we hear is true then American rapper, 50 Cent is on his way to Nigeria to feature in a flick, which would be produced and directed by Emeka Ike.

A source close to Ike disclosed that the movie is a spin off of the actor’s involvement with the training of ex-militants from the Niger Delta, a project he is so dedicated to. “This is a big one for Nollywood. As you read this, plans have been concluded to bring 50 Cent to Nigeria to feature in a new movie. And guess what?

He would be starring alongside Nigerian big names including ex-militants who have renounced violence for peace. The ex-militants underwent special training in acting, cinematography and the basics of filmmaking and production under Emeka Ike in Ghana.

This is the first of such films; many more are on the way. The objective is to practically demonstrate how movies could be used as a tool for empowering restive Nigerian youths,” the source states. Skoops further learnt that work on the movie will begin before the end of the first quarter of this year.

We're Negotiating A Deal With Wizkid--Banky W

 

Following speculation and widespread rumours that the business relationship between superstar artiste, Wizkid and Banky W is heading for the rocks, the EME label boss has decided to throw some light on the issue.

The 'Mr Capable' said this in an interview with Silverbird television. He denied that Wizkid was leaving the label but claimed that talks are already in top gear in handing over a new and juicy deal to Wizkid.

According to Banky W, “Wizkid is going international and as a result we have to re-negotiate the contract he signed. Wizkid has his own idea of how he wants to do things and he has plans for himself too.
